STRESS, STRESS, AND MORE STRESS

"Stress is mental or physical tension, strain, or pressure.  I like the spin stress researchers and authors Doc Childre and Howard Martin give this definition:

Stress is the body and mind's response to any pressure that disrupts their normal balance.  It occurs when our perceptions of events don't meet our expectations and we don't manage our reaction to the disappointment.  Stress-- that unmanaged reaction-- expresses itself as resistance, tension, strain, or frustration, throwing off our physiological and psychological equilibrium and keeping us out of sync.  If our equilibrium is disturbed for long, the stress becomes disabling.  We fade from overload, feel emotionally shut down, and eventually get sick."

I am always talking about the importance of keeping our state of mind at the best that it can be because, if one thing is out of sync... .then everything else is also.  Well, this book links specific emotions to specific diseases.  I found it very interesting.  If you would like to order a copy, CLICK HERE.

Now, we already know that everybody has everyday stress in their lives from having to make decisions, to problems in the family, to schedules to keep, etc...  However, we also know that being over-stressed or not managing our stress is NOT good.

Question:  So what if I am over-stressed.  What harm is it going to do me physically?
Answer:  Many studies have been done on over stress or mismanaged stress.  Below, are a few results.  Please go to end of post for the list of stress-related symptoms:
          *  Unmanaged emotional stress has a 40% higher death rate
               than non-stressed individuals.
          *  For those who are heart attack survivors, anger brought on
by emotional conflicts doubled the risk of subsequent heart
attacks compared to those who controlled their stress and remained calm.
          *  Men who worried about social conditions, health, and personal
finances had a significantly increased risk of coronary heart disease.
          *  Professional women that deals with tension between career and
personal commitment to spouse, children, and friends was a
factor associated with heart disease in women.
          *  Individuals between the ages of 55 and 85 who reported the
highest levels of personal "mastery" -- feelings of control over
life events -- had a nearly 60% lower risk of death compared
with those who felt relatively helpless in the face of life's challenges.
          *  Psychological stress was the strongest predictor of future
cardiac events, including cardiac death, cardiac arrest, and heart attack.

So, what are we saying... UNMANAGED STRESS OR BEING OVERLY-STRESSED can cause heart issues.

Question:  How?
Answer:  I am going to put this in the form of the use of a cell phone for easier understanding.  There is a link between our brain (what we think) and what we experience in the body.  This link is called "Neuropeptides" (chain of amino acids)  Neuropeptides are our cell phones that allows communication.  They are sent along the nervous cells throughout the body).  The brain makes an international cell phone call all over the body and the immune system cells return the cell call back to the brain and remembers the conversation to a certain degree.

When different stresses occur, the brain makes a cell call and gives instruction to the body causing different physical and chemical stress reactions to be triggered and different hormones and neurotransmitters to be activated.  The body will continue to produce these hormones and such until the brain makes another cell call to give instructions to stop.  If long-term emotional stress continues, the brain doesn't make the "stop" cell call and so the hormone levels will reach the chronic level, the production of the hormones become and remain high, thus it becomes destructive and toxic and eventually deadly.

Question:  So, what can we do about it?
Answer:  The body perceives stress from good and bad experiences the same way.  So, there are 2 principles we must keep in mind.

Principle #1 - Not all stress is equal.
i.e. - intense grief is far more damaging than intense joy. The most damaging of emotions are:  rage, unforgiveness, depression, anger, worry, frustration, fear, grief, and guilt.

Principle #2 - We need to learn how to turn off the stress switch
Stress is not about events and experiences as much as it is about a person's perception of their circumstances.  The level of stress has to do with what a person believes.  So, you have the power to control your state of mind.  Therefore, you have the power to turn off the stress switch.

There are many ways to change your state of mind in a non-hazardous situation and to prevent mis-management of stress.

* Meditation
* Positive Affirmations
* Personal "Me" Time
* Frequent Breaks to give your mind a chance to rest from the stress.
* Medication
* Imagery - Imagining positive outcomes or relaxing and comforting surroundings.
* Relaxation Techniques
* Preparation - Expect the best but plan for the worst so as not to be caught off guard.
* Non-procrastination - When needing to complete a task in a short period of time.
* Distraction - When needing to take your mind off of a stressful situation.
* Non-Distraction - When needing to get something stressful completed quickly.

There are many more depending on the many thousands of situations and circumstances.

Deadly Emotions

Understand the MIND-BODY-SPIRIT.
Connection that can heal OR destroy you.

I recently had the opportunity to view a book.  I had the book in my bookshelf for a long time and never realized that it was even there.  When I found it, I found a gem of great price and I want to share some of the information that it has in it.  The book is called "Deadly Emotions" by Don Colbert M.D.  It talks about the relationship between the mind, body, and spirit... the emotions and illness.

I am always talking about the importance of keeping our state of mind at the best that it can be because, if one thing is out of sync... .then everything else is also.  Well, this book links specific emotions to specific diseases.  I found it very interesting.  If you would like to order a copy, CLICK HERE.

I would rather you read the exact words as to not miss what the good doctor is trying to say.  So, I will be taking excerpts from different areas of the book.

Chapter One:  What You Feel Emotionally Becomes How You Feel Physically

"A friend of mine-in good health, I hasten to add-once said to me, "After my husband left me, I was heartbroken.  I truly had meant my vows and I was ready to tough out just about anything:  better or worse, richer or poorer, sickness or health.  It never crossed my mind that I'd get worse, poor, and a husband who was emotionally sick all at once in the first two years of our marriage."  My friend continued, "Shortly after Todd left, my friend Ellen came to me and said something that I thought was strange.  She said, 'Really take care of your health, Jess.  Do the right things.  Don't get sick.'  "Other people had come to me during that time to tell me I needed to get into therapy, pray more, laugh more, go out with friends more, join this club or that club, or do various other things to get over my heartache.  Ellen came to me with words about my physical health and she caught me off guard.  "I asked, 'What do you mean?' She said, 'I know you're doing the right things mentally and emotionally.  Just keep exercising and getting enough rest and eating the right things.  You've got to build up your strength and energy.'  "I had to admit that she might be making a good point.  In the weeks after the divorce, I found myself sleeping a lot-more than usual and maybe even more than necessary.  I didn't seem to have as much strength or energy as I had enjoyed just a few months before.  I pressed her further, 'Why are you saying this to me?  What do you know that I need to know?'  She said. 'Jess, I've seen a lot of people get sick after they get divorced.' I knew Ellen was a nurse.  I asked, 'You see them in the hospital?' She replied, 'Or in the funeral home.  I know of at least two dozen people who developed very serious diseases two to five years after their divorces.  At least nine of those people have died.'  "Ellen got my attention," my friend Jess concluded. "I made a decision that very day that I was going to do everything in my power to stop wallowing in my heartache and to start building strength and energy.  I started on a very serious health program of exercise, eating the right foods, and taking time to rest and have fun with friends.  I also started on a serious program of spiritual renewal.  I stayed well.  In fact, I became stronger and more energetic and more productive than I was before my wedding."  Jess put into words what many physicians know intuitively.  Through the years we physicians frequently see patients go through emotionally devastating experiences such as divorce, bankruptcy, or death of a child - only to see those patients experience heart attacks, recurrences of cancer, autoimmune disease, or serious crippling or disabling conditions.  As physicians, however, the vast majority of us have been trained to separate emotions from physical disease.  out training teaches us that emotions are... well, emotional.  Disease are strictly physical.  Increasingly, however, we are having to confront the fact that the body cannot differentiate between stress that physical factors cause and stress that emotional factors cause.  Stress is stress.  And the consequences of too much unmediated stress are the same regardless of the factors that led to a buildup."

WOW... WOW!  Our state of mind truly does control our bodies even to the physical realm!  This is an enlightening book and as I learn different areas in it over the next few weeks, I will share some specifics with you.

Alternative Medicine #3 - INSOMNIA

Today, with the Allternative Medicine Ratings Guide, we are going to get information about "INSOMNIA"

Everyone, at one time or another, has a problem with getting to sleep and/or staying asleep.  Many of us have jobs to go to, families to get up and take care of, church functions, and everyday business.  So, sleep is a very important necessity for us.  In getting enough sleep, it helps to balance out our mental and physical abilities for the day.  When we do not get enough sleep we begin to exhibit many symptoms of that deprivation.

As a matter of fact, when we are sleep deprived we are not in our best state of mind.  We may not be able to think or concentrate or do our best.  We may make wrong decisions and are more accident prone.  Our fuse is shorter so we may anger easily.  Our state of mind is off kilter because it needs to rest just like our physical bodies need time to rest.  You ever get a time where you just can't shut your brain down and it keeps you awake at night.  It especially happens if you are very stressed about something or very excited about something.  Well, some people may swear by hot baths or showers before bedtime but other people have experienced it waking them up.  Some people say read, exercise, watch a boring movie, drink hot tea or milk, etc.  Some people swear by old time remedies and concoctions.  What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for the other.  In those cases you just have to try the different options and find out what works for you.

So, we all may have the occasional sleep problem.  That is normal.  But, what if it doesn't stay normal and becomes an issue of prolonged sleep deprivation because of either falling to sleep or the inability to stay asleep?  What if it becomes insomnia?  What then?  What can we do about it then?  Well, let’s see what the Alternative Medicine Ratings Guide has to say about that.

INSOMNIA CHART

It says, “Most people who sleep substantially less than eight hours a night experience a variety of unpleasant symptoms. The most common are headaches, mental confusion, irritability, malaise, immune deficiencies, depression, and, of course, fatigue. Complete sleep deprivation can lead to hallucinations and mental collapse.”

It says that one of the best method treatments would be melatonin that is dissolved under the tongue. Melatonin is a hormone and is usually safe for use but can occasionally worsen depression. Melatonin induces sleep but it is useless for maintaining it.

Therefore, they suggest that the best option to improve sleep quality and length of sleep is St. John’s wort. It is not a sleeping pill although it is famous as an antidepressant; it is also effective for sleep disturbances as well.

It tells us that reducing stress will help to allow you to get to sleep and stay asleep.

However, it tells us that in this case, Chinese medicine offers a different approach to insomnia.  And get this... IT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE!  NOW THAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOUR DOCTOR WILL NOT TELL YOU!  You will have to get the Alternative Medicine Ratings Guide to find out more.

Alternative Medicine #2 - BACK PAIN!

Today, with the Allternative Medicine Ratings Guide, we are going to get information about "!BACK PAIN!"

A majority of people deal with back pain, including me, so I decided to write on it.  Some people have acute or sudden back pain and some have chronic or prolonged issues with their back in dealing with pain.  I happen to have both issues.  See, although I already had a little bit of issues that I was working out in dealing with my back, I injured my back a month ago playing a game called "In the river on the bank".  I was trying to prevent myself from falling and twisted my back.  I began to have immediate pain and knew that I did something to it.  I went home, iced it immediately and then rested it.  It didn't get better, in fact, it seemed to get worse.  I began to have a problem just straightening up.  So, I tried to do some stretches and light exercises for it which didn't seem to help much and it just seem to get worse to the point that it prevented me from going on my walks for a few days.  A licensed massage therapist friend of mine allowed me to use his machine in my home so that I can try to cut down on some of the pain.  The machine helped almost immediately but only to a point.  It allowed me to be able to go on my walks again without the pain being so extreme.

However, it has not taken away the problem of this injury all together.  As I look into this book, it has information on back pain.  I am putting some of what it says into action and it is helping me.  although it hurts, I am making sure of proper body mechanics and posture.  I am getting light exercise and stretching but also rest.  However, I will need to see a Chiropractor or Acupuncturist to help with the rest of the problem.  Since my insurance only covers Chiropractor, that will be what I will try... although I do have some interest in the Acupuncture technique... inquiring minds want to know.

The Acute and Chronic Back Pain charts are below.

ACUTE (sudden onset) BACK PAIN:

"Medical treatment would primarily consist of muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories, and physical therapy.  Unfortunately, these treatments produce less than impressive results.  Muscle relaxants, for example, do not really relax muscles.  They are more like tranquilizers, which is why they are most useful when muscle pain interferes with sleep.  Similarly, anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen and naproxen prove only mildly effective and do nothing to speed full recovery.  A greater degree of symptomatic improvement may be achieved through vigorous icing.  Finally, as described above, physical therapy techniques have never been shown to add any additional benefit in the treatment of acute back pain."

"Based on the available research evidence and the opinions of the expert panel, chiropractic treatment is usually the first treatment to try for acute back pain.  Its success rate is high, and its positive effects develop rapidly."

CHRONIC (prolonged) BACK PAIN:

"Conventional medicine has little to offer for chronic back pain besides anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxants, physical therapy, and surgery.  Unfortunately, none of these threatments is particularly satisfactory."

"According to the expert panel, some of the bedst treatments for chronic back pain come from traditional osteopathy.  Methods such as joint mobilization, soft-tissue mobilization, myofascial release, and muscle-energy work can be profoundly effective for chronic back pain, provided you have chosen a qualified practitioner.  I recommend seeking out an osteopathic physician or a nontraditional physical therapist."

In a society of prescription drugs and more drugs it seems as if any time I go to a doctor, they want to pump me full of drugs for this and drugs for that and drugs to help with the interactions of the other drugs and drugs to deal with the side effects of this or that drug… you get my point.

I am a retired nurse and I believe in healing the whole body. But I don't believe that we should pump our bodies full of drugs if there is a better way. If our body is sick, then our state of mind isn't where it should be either. The homeostasis of our body is imbalanced. If there is any part of our body/mind/spirit that is not in balance then we are not in balance… PERIOD.

I believe that God can and has used many avenues to heal or to help treat diseases. He has used miraculous, unexplained healing. For example: after 2 years on forearm crutches and 7 years in a wheelchair, He healed me overnight to allow me to walk again. God heals overnight and He heals over time. He heals through people of the medical field like surgeons, doctors, nurses, neurologists, endocrinologists, physical therapists, etc. He heals through prescription meds, natural herbs, natural treatments, etc.

Now, this is not a slur on doctors. I believe in the help of doctors. I am just being honest so that I can help you to understand the situation. Our doctors are limited on their knowledge of all methods available. For example: They may not be educated in areas of spiritual healing, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, naturopath, etc. and therefore cannot help you in those areas. If that is the case, how do we know that we are getting the most appropriate and best treatment for our condition? How do we know that the doctor isn't just recommending certain drugs because he or she gets a cut for recommending certain treatments because he or she gets a referral bonus?

I want to share a personal experience: This has happened to me in the past 6 months and caused me great pain, bleeding, and discomfort with the possibility of surgery even now. All this because of a doctor, who got cuts from certain pharmaceutical companies in dealing with certain medications that she recommended. She wasn't recommending the correct medication for me that would be covered by my insurance for the condition that I have. It turns out that the med only need (2) letters in front of it to be covered, but she just seemed to not be able to get that correct and kept prescribing other meds that she just happen to have samples of, which didn't help the condition. It took me 5 months of going back and forth to the doctor to get this straightened out. We were trying to decide exactly what I needed and what was covered by my insurance. Because of the length of time it took, the condition exacerbated and I had to have an invasive procedure done in addition to getting extra medications only for the clinic to call me and inform me that I didn't need to continue the medications that the doctor had just prescribed less than 1 week ago. I had just bought these meds with my own money since insurance didn't cover it. But by then the problem was exacerbated and now surgery may be a possibility.

You may be surprised but it happens more than you realize!

Sometimes doctors do not accept or believe in natural herbs or acupuncture or acupressure, etc. There was a time when Chiropractors weren't considered doctors. It was difficult to be recommended to them and your insurance didn't cover you to be seen by them. My point is, your doctor is only referring you to what he or she believes in, not what you believe or other methods that are out there.

Now, if that is the case, how can we rate what the doctor is recommending and how can we be sure of what is best in our own interest for whatever condition that we have? Also, how can we know what is most effective instead of just trusting and depending that the doctor knows best? Unfortunately, sometimes they don't! They are learning also. Right now we have the opportunity to educate ourselves to know what is best for us in our own individual situation. Let's not remain ignorant to our own needs.

Relational Fidelity - Part 3

RELATIONAL FIDELITY - PART 3

Remember, the point is to cover things that prevent you from being victorious or overcoming defeat. If fidelity is a problem for you I have a BOOK, DVD, or CD for you. Click one of the links below to begin having victory over your sexual temptations.

Question: Just because I have a friendship with the opposite sex doesn’t mean it is going to become something sexual does it?

Answer:  Of course not! However, it can lead to a sexual relationship and therefore you must set boundaries and be aware when those boundaries are being crossed either by you or your friend. The point is, any improper action outside of your marriage can cause the destruction of your marriage. So, you want to safeguard it as much as possible on your part. Hold it close and dear to you, which is what it should be. Even if intimacy hasn’t occurred, damage can still be done to the trust area of your relationship with your husband or wife. Even though you may not be having an affair, because of the secrecy, they believe you are having one and therefore it will destroy the trust that they have in you so every time when you are late from work, they are wondering… every time the opposite sex calls the home, they are wondering… any time you get in a disagreement and walk out the door, they are wondering. Secrecy can destroy the trust in a marriage and the marriage relationship as well even when nothing has occurred.

Sometimes when we are only friends with someone and we share personal issues of our marriage relationship, they may feel sympathetic towards our experience. We all want someone to be sympathetic to our cause and because this person is showing that, we form a bond or an attachment of some sort that will bring us back to him or her once again. Then, over time you will begin to notice the attractiveness of that person compared to your spouse. You may have formed a dependence bond unwittingly.

Sometimes communicating with a person via phone, e-mail, or chat can become a fidelity issue. Never should confidential talk with your marriage partner make it to the ears of someone else. Also, there are many topics that should never be discussed between friends in dealing with your significant other.  Boundaries must to be set and abided by.  What happens between you and your love should stay between you and your love.

You may rationalize and say that he or she is only a friend and there is no romantic feeling or attachment. You may be deceiving yourself!

Ask yourself a few questions:

1.  Does your marriage partner know of this relationship or do you hide it?

2.  If your mate know about it, are you defensive when it is mentioned?

3.  Would you hold the same type of conversation with them in front of your significant other that you hold when they are not around?

4.  Are you treating your marriage partner the way you want to be treated?  In other words, how would you feel about this relationship if it was your marriage partner who had the same exact type of relationship with the opposite sex and treating you the exact same way in dealing with it?

Question:  What if I can’t talk to my marriage partner because they are not interested in listening to what I have to say?

Answer:  Try and try again. This is your marriage so you want to give your all to make it successful and happy.  If communication is an issue, this is the most vulnerable time for you and you especially don’t need to talk to someone else of the opposite sex about your marriage problems. This will definitely cause a rift in your marriage.

                        Suggestions:

                        *     Both partners can and should take up classes in dealing
                               with communication… together.

                        *     Put what you learn to practice regularly.

                        *     You may need a professional arbitrator or a marriage
counselor that can facilitate communication between
the two of you and that can teach you how to commun-
icate with your partner and how to listen to what they
are saying even when words aren’t being spoken and
vice versa.  There may be underlying issues that the
counselor can assist you with also.

Conclusion:  If you have a friend of the opposite sex, set boundaries, keep those boundaries, and require your friend(s) to keep them also.  If improper behavior occurs, or you sense a threat to your marriage by being friends with this person, limit the contact and/or sever the relationship for your sake, for the sake of your family, and for the sake of your marriage.

When you are in a marriage relationship, there is a loving, caring, emotional, sexual, unselfish, trusting, respect giving bond that knits you together as one. Utilizing these aforementioned precautions will keep your relationship as it should be… undamaged, intact, and happy.
